Nationwide Student Protests for New Gun Laws

March 20, 2018
by Magnum Photographers
On March 14, 2018 US students staged a nationwide walkout to demand stricter gun laws. Their demands to Congress included a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks for gun-purchasing, and a law that would allow courts to disarm gun owners who display warning signs of violent behavior.
The demonstrations are a reaction to the February 14th mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which resulted in 17 fatalities and 17 wounded. Despite the fact that authorities had received warnings about the alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, a registered gun owner, they didn’t take action. Cruz had been able to obtain a firearms permit even though state officials where aware of past mental and behavioral issues.
Alessandra Sanguinetti photographed a demonstration in Northern California and Peter van Agtmael covered a walkout in downtown Brooklyn.
