The Lake Chad Humanitarian Crisis

It is estimated that 17 million people are directly suffering from effects of the humanitarian crisis in the Lake Chad Basin – with 7 million going hungry. Numerous factors are contributing to this, including disease, climate change, a sudden increase in population, corruption and violent extremism. Lorenzo Meloni, Newsha Tavakolian, Moises Saman and Emin Özmen travelled to the Lake Chad region with ICRC to document the unfolding humanitarian disaster.
