Then & Now: George Rodger's Famous Land Rover

January 20, 2017
by George Rodger
The Series I Land Rover used by George and Jinx Rodger in the 1950s during their travels in Africa, was supposed to be lost for about 30 years – until the vehicle was found in a barn in Australia in 2016 by Land Rover restoration specialists David & Janelle D'Arcy.
In 1957, George and Jinx Rodger started out with “Msuri” (Swahili for “very good”) for more than 3 month on a 4000 miles long Trans-Sahara expedition in search of nomadic Tuareg tribes to document. Another assignment, an African wildlife survey, made them travel 7000 miles across Kenya and Uganda. Sometime after their return to England in 1959 the Land Rover was sold.
When finally coming back into light from under a pile of decaying timber and assorted debris in 2016, the Land Rover still showed signs of some of the many modifications the Rodgers made, including a pair of custom-made sand tracks. Jinx Rodger remembers “They looked like small ladders and paid $20 to have them made by an iron founder in Bechar. At the time, I complained bitterly about the price. George said that we might be happy to pay $100 for the sand tracks if we got struck. He was right of course – we used them the very next week.”
