Paris in Paris: Elliott Erwitt & Herbert List

Magnum Photos Gallery Paris is delighted to present two major exhibitions that explore Paris, bringing together complementary visions of the city by two of Magnum’s great masters.

Some of Elliott Erwitt‘s most iconic photographs, taken between 1949 and 1992, show a different side to Paris. From the iconic ‘Jump in front of the Eiffel Tower’ (1989) to the romantic ‘Eiffel Tower seen through a veil’ (1968) and the almost abstract ‘Cirque d’Hiver’ (1951), the most beautiful city in the world is depicted in these black and white pictures in the master’s typical style with wit, nonchalance and humour.

Herbert List and Paris is a love story and also a story about exile. The photographs in this exhibition, with the mysterious title Paris Noir, explore the atmosphere of the Parisian days and nights in the late 1930s. The landmarks of the city, eternal symbols of Paris, are transformed into poetic, sublime compositions that reveal hidden angles and overlooked details. The human absence adds a dramatic aspect to these majestic portraits of the city. These pictures are far more than documentary, they represent the photographer’s state of mind in an uncertain time.

This exhibition is organized in cooperation with La Hune gallery in the Saint-Germain district in Paris; Elliott Erwitt’s magnificent photographs of New York will be shown there at the same time, inviting the visitor to discover Erwitt’s vision of these two magical cities over two legendary venues.
