French publisher Xavier Barral passed away on 17 February 2019, at the age of 63. Founder of the graphic design agency Atalante in 1992, and 10 years later of his own publishing house, Les Éditions Xavier Barral, he has collaborated over the years with many Magnum photographers. Within the agency, he built friendships and took care of multiple artistic projects in a way few others have. Passionate and sensitive, he knew how to bring even the most complicated projects to life. All the photographers who sought to work with him knew, that they would not only be listened to, but understood.
About his work as a book editor and designer, he once said: “I make books first of all to be able to spend time with my friends”. He is dearly missed by his friends.
