Magnum Photos Switzerland is happy to announce a unique workshop programme led by Magnum photographers Lua Ribeira and Carl de Keyzer in collaboration with photoSCHWEIZ19.

The workshop is aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, where each photographer will lead their group through an intensive and focused daily program of shooting exercises, reviews, group critiques, editing sessions and peer learning. The format of the workshops, small groups of a maximum of 12 participants, will ensure an intimate and supportive atmosphere.

The programme will open with an evening lecture where the students will be invited to meet and learn from both photographers. The program will end with a public projection of the work produced during the three days. Participants will spend the three days alongside their selected photographer, developing their visual language, photographic identity, and practical, technical and conceptual skills. The workshops will also offer professional practice sessions and support from Melody Gygax, Magnum Business Development Manager for Switzerland, and photography educator.

<b>Workshop with Lua Ribeira </b>

Join Magnum photographer Lua Ribeira for a three-day workshop on mastering the practice of portraiture. With in-depth lectures, portfolios reviews and practical exercises, participants will be encouraged to approach the art of portraiture by examining their relationship with the subject being photographed. The aim of the workshop is to help participants develop their own personal vision, gain confidence and make informed aesthetic choices in order to create meaningful portraits.

This workshop is Intended for enthusiasts, emerging and professional photographers. Participants will be given a shooting assignment and must come with equipment they are comfortable with and ready to use.


<b>Workshop with Carl de Keyzer </b>


Learn how to create a coherent documentary project during an intensive workshop experience. Confronting the class with real shooting situations and honest feedback, Magnum photographer Carl de Keyzer will lead the group through technical and conceptual learnings to refine your storytelling skills. The workshop will provide participants with professional guidance on how to research, build, analyze, edit and shape a documentary project when working on a short assignment.
The three days will be split into different sessions: lectures and inspirational discussions, professional practice, reviews and shooting.

This workshop is Intended for enthusiasts, emerging and professional photographers. Participants will be given a shooting assignment and must come with equipment they are comfortable with and ready to use.

BIOGRAPHIES

<b>Lua Ribeira </b>
Lua Ribeira was born in 1986, Galicia, in the north of Spain. She received a BA Hons in Media Studies at the University of Vigo, 2009. In 2010 she moved to Barcelona and studied Graphic Design, where she discovered photography. Adopting it as vocation, Lua moved to the U.K. in 2012 and later enrolled on the Documentary Photography course, at the University of South Wales, where she graduated with honors in 2016.

Her practice, characterized by its collaborative nature, is the result of extensive research and an immersive approach to the subject matter. Ribeira is interested in trespassing social barriers, and breaking the structural separation in relation to particular communities. By exploring the perception of life generated outside the strictly socially acceptable, she aims to question the morals and values she grew up by.

Lua is the recipient of the Firecracker Grant 2015, Jerwood Photoworks Award 2018, and the Magnum Graduate Photographers Award 2017. Her series Noises in the Blood, about Jamaican dancehall culture in the U.K. was published in book form by Fishbar in 2017. The series was also published in the book Firecrackers, Female Photographers Now (2017) Thames and Hudson Ltd.
Lua joined Magnum as a Nominee in 2018.

<b>Carl De Keyzer </b>
Carl De Keyzer started his career as a freelance photographer in 1982 while supporting himself as a photography instructor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. At the same time, his interest in the work of other photographers led him to co-found and co-direct the XYZ-Photography Gallery. A Magnum nominee in 1990, he became a full member in 1994.

De Keyzer, who has exhibited his work regularly in European galleries, is the recipient of a large number of awards including the Book Award from the Arles Festival, the W. Eugene Smith Award (1990) and the Kodak Award (1992).

De Keyzer likes to tackle large-scale projects and general themes. A basic premise in much of his work is that, in overpopulated communities everywhere, disaster has already struck, and infrastructures are on the verge of collapse. His style is not dependent on isolated images; instead, he prefers an accumulation of images which interact with text (often taken from his travel diaries). In a series of large tableaux, he has covered India, the collapse of the Soviet Union and – more recently – modern-day power and politics.
