Guantanamo Bay

In late January, Peter van Agtmael traveled to Guantanamo Bay to photograph the controversial US military prison. Established under the George W. Bush administration during the War on Terror and constructed within the existing US Navy base, the compound was intended to hold the most dangerous terror suspects. Barack Obama was unable to follow through with his promise to close the detention camp but during his administration the size of the detainee population was reduced from 245 to 41. The prison has long been criticized for the prolonged detention of untried suspects and allowing forms of torture.
