An intensive weekend workshop offering the latest thinking on contemporary photographic practice with Magnum photographer Gregory Halpern and industry experts.

Magnum Photos and Mana Contemporary have partnered to present an intensive two-day professional practice masterclass with insightful lectures on the business of fine art and social documentary work, intensive group critiques, and networking opportunities.

Working in the creative industry is highly rewarding and, at the same time challenging. This intensive weekend is a unique opportunity for artists and industry experts to support and inspire each other while discussing new approaches on how to make a living doing their most fulfilling work.

Over two days, this photographic masterclass will offer participants the chance to hear from celebrated Magnum photographer Gregory Halpern and industry experts: Azu Nwagbogu (Director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art in South Africa), Michael Mack (MACK Books), Paul Moakley (Editor at Large for Special Projects at TIME), Sarah Meister (The Museum of Modern Art) and more to be announced.

Each day focuses on demystifying an aspect of the industry, establishing a professional network of contacts, understanding the requirements of the market, and identifying realistic collaborators and funding sources to help launch your projects. You will also gain constructive critique of your work in portfolio review sessions with select industry experts on the second day of the workshop.

Overall the programme offers highly valuable training opportunities for early & mid-career photographers and provides an opportunity to expose and explore your work at Mana Contemporary, a leading arts destination dedicated to celebrating the creative process and fostering collaboration among photographers, painters, filmmakers, choreographers, sculptors, mixed media artists and more.

<b>Biographies</b>
<b>Gregory Halpern</b>
Gregory Halpern is known for his intuitively rich colour photography that draws attention to harsh social realities as well as the unerring strangeness of everyday life. His work is rooted in both the real and the sublime and this approach has lead him to photograph life in post-industrial towns of the American Rust Belt, the people and places of Los Angeles and the uniquely unifying experience of a total solar eclipse.

<b>Azu Nwagbogu</b>
Azu Nwagbogu is the Founder and Director of African Artists’ Foundation (AAF), a non-profit organisation based in Lagos, Nigeria. Nwagbogu is Director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art in South Africa, a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum with over one hundred galleries dedicated to showcasing contemporary art from Africa and it’s Diaspora. He is the creator of Art Base Africa, a virtual space to discover and learn about contemporary African Art. He has served as a juror on multiple high-profile photography awards and guest curated at international festivals and galleries across the globe.

<b>Michael Mack</b>
Michael Mack is a publisher of art, photography and critical text books. He has written, designed, edited and produced nearly 500 titles, including some of the defining art books of the past 20 years. As Managing Director of Stiedl, he founded the SteidlMACK imprint before establishing his eponymous independent publishing house in 2010. Mack works closely with established and emerging artists, writers and curators, as well as world-leading cultural organisations, who are invested in the book as an art form.

<b>Paul Moakley</b>
Paul Moakley is is an award-winning visuals producer, director and journalist with almost 20 years of experience in news and documentary storytelling. Currently he is Editor at Large for Special Projects at TIME and caretaker and curator of the Alice Austen House Museum. In his role as Deputy director of Photography and Visual Enterprise from 2010-2018 at TIME he co-created some of the magazine’s most ambitious impact projects including the Emmy award-winning Beyond 9/11 multimedia project with HBO, TIME's 100 Most Influential Photos and The Opioid Diaries. For almost a decade Paul has managed TIME’s visual coverage of breaking news, presidential elections and key franchises such as TIME’s Person of the Year, TIME 100 and the award-winning visual storytelling platform LightBox.

<b>Sarah Meister</b>
Sarah Meister is Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art. She is the co-director of the August Sander Project, lead instructor for the online course Seeing Through Photographs, and co-editor and contributing author for the three volume series Photography at MoMA. Recent exhibitions at MoMA include Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction (2017), and One and One Is Four: The Bauhaus Photocollages of Josef Albers (2016, with accompanying publication). Her work addresses key figures and issues across the history of photography, and includes forthcoming projects on Frances Benjamin Johnston’s Hampton Album, Dorothea Lange and São Paulo’s Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante.
