Magnum Workshop in Singapore

July 28, 2016
In collaboration with the Singapore International Photography Festival
10 - 14/15 October, 2016

The Magnum Workshop in Singapore is a new intensive five-day workshop designed to guide and encourage photographers in refining visual narratives in the Magnum tradition of documentary storytelling.

The third initiative conceived by Magnum Photos and Singapore International Photography Festival follows on from the successes of the Magnum Mentorship programmes hosted in 2012 and 2014.

Intended for photographers wishing to broaden their visual perspective and push the boundaries of their personal development, the Magnum Workshop will elevate the professional standard of both regional and international photographers, under the guidance of renowned Magnum’s contemporary practitioners, Matt Black, Chien-Chi Chang and Alessandra Sanguinetti.

A new format has been developed this year to help photographers realise their vision in producing works for their desired output. Each mentor will focus on guiding photographers in the production of works for one of the three presentation methods: Exhibition (Matt Black), Multimedia (Chien-Chi Chang) and Publication (Alessandra Sanguinetti).

The workshop will culminate in a public showcase and evening projection of students’ work in DECK’s Courtyard, as part of the official programme of the Singapore International Photography Festival, from 15 to 30 October.

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Chien-Chi Chang

The intensive workshop is aimed at professionals and serious photography enthusiasts. The final output will dictate how a photographic project is pursued. The goal is to develop and deepen your own storytelling ability, i.e. your unique vision and voice.

Every day will be filled with shooting assignments, group review and one-to-one critique. For those who plan to pursue to multimedia, make sure you have most of your video and audio assets ready before the workshop so that we concentrate on when to cut and which kind of cut is appropriate and effective. And, most importantly, how to use cuts you make to advance the story emotionally and intellectually.

Be prepared to work long hours!

Matt Black

Matt Black’s workshop will focus on developing and deepening your connection and commitment to long term documentary work.
The commitment we will explore is twofold, both to your subject, and to your work: how to follow themes and ideas over time and build your photographs into cohesive bodies of work that are socially relevant and personally meaningful.

Through assignments and class discussion, the workshop will sharpen your perceptive skills as a photographer and work to bridge the gap between your ideas and how you photograph. The goal is to establish a personal, authentic, and ongoing visual dialogue with your subject.

Alessandra Sanguinetti

This intensive workshop will challenge, guide, and push students to make new responses to their ideas. The goal is to help students to develop their personal projects through individual tutorials, mini assignments, experimentation, and group reviews. The masterclass aims to identify each participant's visual language and define their photographic approach, and encourage participants to realise both personal and assigned projects.

The masterclass will help to develop and realize each participant's project. When telling a story, we have a rare opportunity to step into someone else’s world – be it a loved one or a stranger, a familiar or foreign community – at times anonymously, at other times with the complicity of the portrayed. This workshop will explore storytelling in its many forms, with the emphasis on the use of portraiture within a narrative. The participants will be expected to engage with a subject in ways that challenge their comfort levels and boundaries, with a sense of play and a willingness to experiment.

The first day of the workshop will consist of group portfolio reviews and discussions on week assignments. The week will consist of shooting, editing, class reviews and tutorials, with discussions on work focused on both approach and technique. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have more insight into their own path, and will have worked on a story on their subject consisting of a collection of edited and sequenced images, and a notion of the ideal form of presentation for the work.

CONDITIONS

This workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels and genres. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph.
