Beyond Melting Ice and Solar Panels

Magnum Photos is co-hosting an evening panel discussion: <i>Beyond Melting Ice and Solar Panels: Capturing The Human Stories of a Changing Climate</i> at the Magnum Foundation, with Adam Corner of Climate Visuals, Simone Salvo of Magnum Foundation and Multidisciplinary Artist and Journalist, Michael Premo.

In a lively presentation and panel discussion, our guest speakers will explore the cliches and challenges in climate imagery, and discuss what a more relatable, human-centred visual language for climate change could look like.

After brief welcoming comments, each speaker will give a 15-20 minute opening presentation about their work within the context of the issue, followed by a discussion, before opening up for Q & A with the audience for around 20 minutes.

<b>About Adam Corner:</b>
Dr Adam Corner is Research Director at UK climate communications specialists Climate Outreach, and leads the 'Climate Visuals' programme which aims to catalyse a new visual language for Climate Change. Based on international social research with over 3000 people, Climate Visuals advocates for a more diverse and compelling visual language that does justice to the human story of the 21st Century. The Climate Visuals image library is the first of its kind: an evidence-based gallery of climate photography that illustrates the research behind the project and signposts a different way to convey climate change to public audiences.

<b>About Simone Salvo:</b>
Simone Salvo leads communications and events at the Magnum Foundation, a non-profit organization expanding creativity and diversity in documentary photography. She is interested in public engagement and merging art practices with other disciplines to further the reach and impact of a story. She has produced interactive activations and public-facing exhibitions, such as #reframeclimate, a visual intervention on climate change with #Dysturb. She also advises individual artists and small non-profits on messaging and digital communications strategies. Simone received her BA in Photography and Human Rights from Bard College, and serves on the advisory board of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs program in New York City.

<b>About Michael Premo:</b>
Michael Premo is an artist, journalist and filmmaker. In addition to his work with Storyline, he has created original film, radio, and theater with numerous companies including Hip-Hop Theater Festival, The Foundry Theater, The Civilians, and the Peabody Award winning StoryCorps. Michael's photography has appeared in publications like The Village Voice, The New York Times, and Het Parool, among others. Recent projects with Storyline include the multi-platform project 28th Amendment: Housing is a Human Right, the participatory documentary Sandy Storyline, and award-winning short film and exhibit Water Warriors. For the Corporation for Public Broadcasting he helped produce Veterans Coming Home, a multi-platform public media series distributed by PBS. Michael consults on participatory documentary processes, impact strategy, and civic engagement through Storyline and the Interaction Institute for Social Change. A recent highlight of that work includes working as an impact producer for the film This Changes Everything by Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein. He has participated in civic artist-in-residencies with The Laundromat Project and the National Resource Defense Council. Michael is on the Board of Trustees of A Blade of Grass and A Center for Story-Based Strategy.
