Magnum Photos is delighted to announce its participation to HOST, in collaboration with Fotografia Europea 014 and aBcM. HOST launches a series of initiatives aimed at the public of Fotografia Europea, with a direct exchange with the photographers of Magnum Photos.
HOST is a section of the festival that includes a partnership with the most important international photo agency, to enrich the opening days with initiatives, meetings, screenings and workshops aimed at a public interested in photography d’auteur, photo journalism and editorial, exhibition and arts activities in general, which are part of the mission of Magnum Photos and its photographers.
The Magnum masterclasses will be led by Magnum photographers Abbas, David Alan Harvey, Jonas Bendiksen, Patrick Zachmann and will be held at Musei Civici – Palazzo San Francesco in Reggio Emilia.
The masterclasses are aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, who are interested in narrative and storytelling, and looking to take the next step in their photographic development. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with, and all efforts will be made to accommodate their choice.
The masterclasses will take place from Thursday 1st May 2014 until Saturday 3rd May 2014.
During these 3 days, each Magnum photographers will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst peers.
Participants will work will their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop projection. The projection will take place at Teatro Municipale Valli during the Magnum Night.
As part of a special partnership with Magnum Photos Educational Program, The British Journal of Photography will work with each Magnum tutor to identify a deserving masterclass participant per class, who will enjoy a special online feature of their work produced during the masterclasses accompanied by an interview.
Also, A jury composed by ia group of magazines' editors and photo editors will select the best portfolios among the ones submitted for the masterclass' application. Each editor will then publish online his/her favorite one on the related magazine.
Jurors: Alessia Glaviano (Vogue Italia), Renata Ferri (Io Donna), Manik Katyal (Emaho Magazine), Diego Orlando (Burn Magazine).
For Burn Magazine, the best Instagram profile among the masterclasses' applicants will be selected and he/she will be the photographer of the week on @burndiary.
Selected participants will be provided with necessary information in the form of Welcome Packs prior to the event and with a free pass for the Festival.
This workshop is not about learning new technical skills, but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. It will be held in English/Italian. The classes will be composed of groups of maximum 10/12 students per photographer. Each group will be assigned a bilingual assistant, which will help for translation, technical or logistical issues.
Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum Photos highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. We also recommend participants to arrive with one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research be conducted before the workshop begins.
