It is through his uncle’s commercial studio based in northwestern Tunisia that Zied first discovered photography. Building up skills and techniques through the years by doing portraiture and commercial work, in 2011 after the Jasmin Revolution, he decided to commit himself to documenting Tunisian society as a freelance photographer.

In 2011, during the first days of the Libyan war, Zied photographed a refugee camp based in Tunisia along the Libyan border. His project ‘Waiting Zone’ focused on representing the suspension of time in the camps - the uncertainty linked to waiting for change.

Throughout his projects Zied consistently works in black and white as a way to focus the viewer’s attention on the complex interplay of social, political, and economical issues at the heart of his stories.
With ‘Children of the Moon’ in 2013, Zied photographed children in Tunisia affected by a genetic disorder called Xeroderma Pigmentosum, which affects their capacity to renew skin cells damaged by UV lights and exposes them to greater risks of skin cancer.

Zied’s stories Tataouine (2014) and West of Life (2014-2016) narrate the daily lives of people often located remotely from the Government’s zones of interest such as the capital and touristic areas in the eastern part of the country.

Zied has exhibited his work worldwide including at the MUCEM, Marseille, Houston Center for Photography in Texas, 1x1 Gallery in Dubai, Institut Du Monde Arabe in Paris, and White Box in New York. Zied also worked as a documentary filmmaker on the Arab Spring in Tunisia and was a participant in World Press Photo’s 2013 Reporting Change initiative, in 2017, he published his first photobook “West Of Life”.

Zied Ben Romdhane joined Magnum as a Nominee in 2019 and was elevated to Associate status in 2023.
