Magnum Photos is delighted to announce its first workshop in Tokyo in collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Photography and supported by Leica camera Japan. The Magnum workshop will be led by Magnum photographers Antoine d'Agata and Jacob Aue Sobol and will be held at the Tokyo Institute of Photography (T.I.P).
T.I.P was founded in 2010 as a platform for photographers and photography enthusiasts. With a mission to support a cross-cultural dialogue between the Eastern and Western photography communities, T.I.P.’s programs include local and international exhibitions, photography workshops at every level, and access to professional digital print lab and studio. (

The workshop is aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, who are interested in narrative and storytelling, and looking to take the next step in their photographic development. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with, and all efforts will be made to accommodate their choice.

The workshop will take place from Wednesday 19th March 2014 until Sunday 23rd March 2014.
During these 5 days, each Magnum photographers will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst peers.
Participants will work will their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop projection. The projection will take place at Reminders Project stronghold ( Reminders Photography stronghold is a curated membership gallery making multiple photographic activities (exhibitions, residencies, grants, book publishing).
As part of a special partnership with The British Journal of Photography, Magnum tutors and the BJP editors will decide of one workshop participant from each group to enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview. The online article will also be feature on Magnum's Education web pages.

The deadline for application is Monday 27th January 2014.

This workshop is not about learning new technical skills, but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. It will be held in English/Japanese. The class will be split in two groups of 12 students per photographer. Each group will be assigned a bilingual assistant, which will help for translation, technical or logistical issues.
Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do s, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. We also recommend participants to arrive with one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research be conducted before the workshop begins.
