The Ottoman Empire officially ended 100 years ago today, November 1st 1922.

The Ottoman sultanate was abolished and Turkey was declared a republic. The European occupation of dismembered parts of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of Word War 1 prompted the establishment of the Turkish National Movement under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk). Distinguishing himself, Atatürk became the first President of Turkey and embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern and secular nation-state.
