In the long history of tensions, military confrontations and wars between Israel and Lebanon, Israel occupied part of South Lebanon for almost two decades.

The occupation began with the Israeli military excursion of 1978 (Operation Litani), which resulted in the withdrawal of Israeli forces, who ceded their positions inside Lebanon to their ally, the militia of the South Lebanon Army (SLA), led by Saad Haddad. In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon as far as Beirut in response to a wave of attacks launched from Lebanese territory by Palestinian militants. Israel later withdrew from most of the occupied...
