On May 29th 1985 disaster occurred at the European Champions Cup when Juventus played Liverpool F.C. in Brussels. Prior to the match fanatical spectators rallied rival spectators standing in a neutral area of the ground into a corridor where they were trampled and crushed in their efforts to escape the Liverpool fans attacks. Thirty-nine mainly Juventus fans were killed with 400 wounded. The match marked the beginning of a 6 year period of English exclusion from international football. Some argue the English teams never recovered their previous competitive form lost during the hiatus.
