Exhibition - Common Sense 

Martin Parr 

In 1999, Martin Parr published Common Sense, a close-up study of global consumption and waste. Combining all the elements which had informed his photography in the 70s and 80s, it was an obsessive pursuit of the vulgar, the broken and the absurd. As an exhibition piece it was cheaply produced as colour Xeroxes and distributed to venues across the world. Now installed in the Tate Gallery as part of the Tate Britain’s collection, it signified the end of a journey for Martin Parr from the fringes of independent photography to the centre of the art establishment.
