In the lead up to Pope Francis' pastoral trip to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families on August 25th and 26th, we look back to Magnum photographers' images from almost forty years ago when Pope John Paul II became the first to visit Ireland in 1979. Over the past 39 years, Ireland's relationship with the Catholic Church has radically changed - the legalising of abortion and having an openly gay Prime Minister could never be imagined in 1979.
