Richard Kalvar
Kenneth Allen Gibson, the first black mayor of Newark, New Jersey, died on March 29, 2019 at the age of 86. Gibson, a former city engineer, was elected in 1970 - the first of four terms - amid a hard-fought and racially charged campaign to unseat the two-term incumbent, a fellow Democrat on trial for corruption. As the first black mayor of a major Northeastern US city, Gibson served his historic tenure against a backdrop of the region’s economic disruptions and changing demographics.
