Feature - Avdiivka: A Town in the Line of Fire
Recaptured from pro-Russian rebels in 2014, the key Ukrainian Army stronghold of Avdiivka has been on the front line of the war between government forces and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Avdiivka is close to rebel-controlled Donetsk and important roads used by the rebels to transport machinery and ammunition. Equally important is Avdiivka’s coking and chemical plant - the largest in Europe - which produces the supplies necessary to maintain Ukraine’s steel industry. In early February 2017, Avdiivka became the center of a resurgence in fighting.
