In 1970, shortly after taking pictures of Soviet tanks invading Prague, Josef Koudelka left Czechoslovakia, his homeland. He spent his winters in London and Paris, and the rest of the year on the roads of Europe, tracking down coincidences. During this period, in the 1970s and 1980s, Josef Koudelka took his most enchanted pictures, the Exils series.
