It is with great sadness that Magnum Photos announces the death of Abbas who passed away earlier today at the age of 74. Abbas, who started out writing and photographing, first joined Magnum in 1981 and became a full member in 1985.

Magnum’s current president Thomas Dworzak paid tribute to the veteran photographer, who for many at the agency has been both a friend and mentor:
