Feature - Migrant Crisis in Catania
As of this summer, Europe has seen an almost 20% rise in the number of migrants coming to its shores compared to the previous year. Of all the migrants seeking shelter in Europe, 85% have been landing in Italy. Despite having a strong tradition of sheltering migrants over the past 25 years, Italian migrant reception centers are struggling to host the estimated 1,400 refugees arriving daily by way of the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily is often the first landing place of ships heading to Italy, and the eastern city of Catania is home to the largest migrant reception center on the island, the Mineo Center.
