St George’s Day has long been England’s overlooked national holiday. It has often been treated with indifference and has never received the kind of recognition or vigour as for St Patrick’s Day in Ireland, Burns Night in Scotland or Bastille Day in France.

However, a creeping resurgence of English nationalism has seen the Cross of St George move from being a largely sporting motif restricted to the realms of soccer, cricket and rugby, to one that is increasingly ubiquitous and a potent symbol of national pride.
