The Pan-American Highway, running from Alaska to southern South America, is broken in only one spot, at the Darien Gap, a jungle lying at the eastern edge of Panama, on the border with Colombia. The road from Panama City leads eastward towards Colombia, gradually narrowing to a dirt road and stopping at Yaviza, not far from the border as the crow flies, but separated by jungle and rivers. A small commercial airport at El Real lies a little further into the region.
