Feature - South Sudan: Fearing Islam. 1998.
A. Abbas
At war with the central government, practically since independence, South Sudan is one of the most isolated and primitive regions on earth. Religion, christianity , is an important element in the struggle vs the Khartum regime controlled by militant islamists. In the areas liberated by the SSIM, mostly of the Nuer tribe , the state is non existent, save for the army.

European and American NGO's provide some services, including health.
