NORTHERN IRELAND. 10th Anniverary of British Troops. 1979.

Chris Steele-Perkins

'British Out' was a demonstration organised by the Republican Army in Belfast, and confined to the Roman Catholic 'Falls Road' whereby 7,000 protestors condemned the British Army presence in Northern Ireland since the 14th Augst 1969. 'Get the Brits Out' hollered the rock throwing youths not only heard in Belfast but also in Londonderry where 16,000 Protestants marched through the towns' Catholic distric in their annual 'Apprentice Boys Parade'. The Protestants in their bowler hats marched to the drums and fifes, commemorating the incident in 1689 when the Apprentice Boys of Londonderry, supporting King William of Orange. slammed the city gates in the face of the Catholic King James II. It was the same anniversarry march which set off the rioting in 1969 in the Catholic BOgside quarter of Londonderry and eventually led to the British Governments decision to send troops to Northern Ireland. At this time the contingent was of 600 British soldiers, although today there are 15,000 stationed in the 6 counties. The war is costing British taxpayers over $600 per minute, the casualties in the Ulster war have been heavy with 1936 persons killed of which 300 have been British troops, 30 have been policemen and 20,780 injured.
