In conjunction with its 67th Annual General Meeting, Magnum Photos are proud to announce a 2 day masterclass led by acclaimed contemporary photographers Jim Goldberg, Mark Power and Alec Soth.
Magnum Photos is an agency synonymous with integrity, curiosity and ‘concerned’ photography. For over sixty years, Magnum’s international photographers have chronicled the world; interpreting its environment, people and events and helping to shape documentary photography as a modern form of artistic expression. As a modern agency, the current preoccupation is focused on the role of authorship in an image saturated world. In conjunction with Magnum’s historic archive a new means of culturally relevant production is being explored by both agency and its photographers, leading to a greater dialogue with the wider art market, diverse platforms and emerging geographies.
In the tradition of Magnum’s commitment to emerging photographers, this exclusive masterclass will give limited participants a rare opportunity to refine their photographic practice and sense of authorship under the guidance of Magnum’s progressive photographers.
The masterclass will incorporate inspirational presentations from all three Magnum photographers, portfolio critiques and an overnight shooting assignment. Critiques will be conducted amongst masterclass groups, encouraging confidence building skills and the ability to communicate projects as well as engaging peer-to-peer feedback.
Participants will work with their assigned Magnum photographer and their Masterclass group to developing a realistic overnight brief; work from which will be reviewed the following day. There will be ample time for questions, book signings and to discuss specific aspects of photography and the industry.
Participation will be based on a competitive process. Applicants will be chosen on the strength of submitted portfolios and the perceived benefit to the photographer’s career.

Photographer biographies
Jim Goldberg
Jim Goldberg is a Professor of Art at the California College of Arts and Crafts and a member of Magnum Photos. He has been exhibiting for over 30 years and his innovative use of image and text make him a landmark photographer of our times. He began to explore experimental storytelling and the potentials of combining image and text with “Rich and Poor”, (1977-85), where he juxtaposed the residents of welfare hotel rooms with the upper class and their elegantly furnished home interiors to investigate the nature of American myths about class, power, and happiness. In "Raised by Wolves” (1985-95), he worked closely with and documented runaway teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles to create a book and exhibition that combined original photographs, text, home movie stills, snapshots, drawings, diary entries as well as single and multi-channel video, sculpture, found objects, light boxes and other 3-D elements. He is currently working on two books on migration in Europe to be published in 2009 and 2010 by Steidl. He is represented by Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York and the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco.
His work is in numerous private and public collections including NYMOMA, SFMOMA, Whitney, Getty, LACMA, Corcoran, MFA Boston, Hallmark Collection, The High Museum, Library of Congress, MFA Houston, National Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Jim Goldberg’s fashion, editorial and advertising work has appeared in numerous publications including W, Details, Flaunt, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rebel, GQ,The New Yorker, and Dazed and Confused. He lives and works in San Francisco.
Mark Power
As a child Mark Power discovered his father's home-made enlarger in the family attic, a contraption consisting of an upturned flowerpot, a domestic light bulb and a simple camera lens.
His interest in photography probably began at this pivotal moment, although he later chose to study painting and drawing instead. He 'became a photographer' (somewhat accidentally) in 1983, and worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly ten years, before he began teaching in 1992 (Power is currently the Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton).
This move coincided with a shift towards long-term, self-initiated projects, which now sit comfortably alongside a number of large-scale commissions in the industrial sector.
Power's work has been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the world and is in several public and private collections. He has published six books: 'The Shipping Forecast' (1996), 'Superstructure' (2000), 'The Treasury Project' (2002), '26 Different Endings' (2007), 'The Sound of Two Songs' (2010) and 'Mass' (2013).
Mark Power joined Magnum Photos in 2002.
Alec Soth
Alec Soth’s work is rooted in the distinctly American tradition of ‘on-the-road photography’ developed by Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. From Huckleberry Finn to Easy Rider there seems to be a uniquely American desire to travel and chronicle the adventures that consequently ensue. He has received fellowships from the McKnight, Bush, and Jerome Foundations and was the recipient of the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His photographs are represented in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Walker Art Center. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial and a career survey at the Jeu de Paume in 2008.
His first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004 to critical acclaim. Since then Soth has published NIAGARA (Steidl, 2006), Fashion Magazine (Magnum, 2007), Dog Days, Bogotá (Steidl, 2007), The Last Days of W (Little Brown Mushroom, 2008), and Broken Manual (Steidl, 2010). In 2008, Soth started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom. He is represented by the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York and the Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis. Alec Soth became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2004 and a full member in 2008. He is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
