On 14 May 1948, the British Mandate of Palestine ended and the Israeli state was officially proclaimed by David Ben Gurion. The planned independent Arab state, which was voted for by the UN, was not established at the same time leading to many Arab citizens of Palestine to leave. Neighboring states also did not officially recognize the new Jewish state and so began the Arab-Israeli War in 1948.

Magnum photographers documented this end of the Mandate, the arrival of the new settlers and the Arab-Israeli war which led thousands of Arabs to escape from Israel.
