The State of Israel

On December 6 2017, President Donald Trump unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced his plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. May 14, 2018 marks the official relocation date of the embassy, which falls on 70th anniversary of the declaration of the State of Israel.

On this day in 1948, the British Mandate of Palestine ended and the Israeli state was officially proclaimed by David Ben Gurion. Magnum photographers documented this end of the Mandate, the arrival of the new settlers and the Arab-Israeli war which led thousands of Arabs to flee from Israel.

With violent protests once again looming, Paolo Pellegrin photographed "The Holy City" of Jerusalem after President Trump's late 2017 announcement and the "Clashes in Ramallah" that followed in the West Bank.
