Ekrem Imamoglu of the opposition Republican People’s Party was elected mayor of Istanbul on March 31, defeating the ruling party candidate, former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. The election result represented the end of 25 years of the Justice and Development Party ( AKP ) and its Islamist predecessor governing the capital. Following controversy, Erdogan’s AKP charged that a series of election irregularities made the results illegitimate and overturned the vote.
