March 21, 2020 marks the 60th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre. During a protest against Apartheid laws near a police station in Sharpeville Township, South Africa, police fired on the crowd of unarmed demonstrators, killing 69 people and wounding over 175 others. Ian Berry was the only photographer on site that day documenting the demonstrations when the situation turned violent. Today, South Africa recognizes March 21st as Human Rights Day, honoring those who lost their lives during this and other tragedies throughout Apartheid. On the eve of the 60th anniversary, Ian Berry returned to Sharpeville and photographed the Sharpeville Massacre memorial and what has become of the surrounding area.
