Magnum Contact Sheets in Belgium

by Magnum Photographers
The exhibition that tells the stories behind the images comes to Belgium

A working document, photographers’ contact sheets were not designed to be displayed, and many photographers are reluctant to exhibit them because, in a way, they expose their creative process. However, the exhibition Magnum Contact Sheets allows us to delve into the history behind some of the most iconic images of photojournalists of the Magnum agency, such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David 'Chim' Seymour, Werner Bischof, Marc Riboud, Eve Arnold, René Burri, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Bruno Barbey, Hiroji Kubota, Steve McCurry, Jean Gaumy, Paolo Pellegrin and Cristina García Rodero.

Presenting a remarkable selection of contact sheets and related material by 67 Magnum photographers, Magnum Contact Sheets lays bare the creative methods, strategies and editing processes behind some of the world’s most iconic images — was the final image a set-up, or a serendipitous encounter; did the photographer work to extract the potential from a situation, or was it the fabled ‘decisive moment’?
