Using the sprawling Indonesian capital as a backdrop, this intensive workshop will be an exercise in incubation and growth. Benefit from this opportunity to receive direct feedback from Carl De Keyzer and make new work under his guidance.
The workshop will alternate between shooting sessions, group sessions and one-to-one portfolio reviews. Carl De Keyzer will give an assignment at the beginning of the workshop which will be used as the thread to guide participants into creating a cohesive documentary project through looking at narrative, editing and sequencing.
Carl De Keyzer will share his extensive experience working as a photographer, publishing books and exhibiting his work internationally, as well as his invaluable knowledge from his role as a lecturer at the University of Fine Arts in Ghent.
The workshop is taking place during the international photo festival JIPFest. Participants will also have the opportunity to join the activities organised by the festival and meet other industry professionals and photographers that are part of the programme.

Magnum Photos and JIPFest are proud to sponsor three scholarships for this workshop and are inviting photographers from Indonesia to apply.
The scholarship is open to Indonesian citizens, who are 21 years old and older with basic proficiency in English and currently working on long-term projects. We particularly encourage freelance photographers to apply.
The successful candidate will be selected by the representatives of Magnum Photos and JIPFest.
The successful applicant will be responsible for covering his/her expenses for the workshop (travel + accommodation).

<b>Biography</b>
<b>Carl De Keyzer</b>
Carl De Keyzer tackles large-scale themes through an accumulative, expansive approach. He builds up narratives through collected images, which often interact with text (taken from his travel diaries). In a series of large-format prints, he has covered India, the collapse of the Soviet Union and – more recently – modern-day power and politics in North Korea. His seminal project, God, Inc., captured religious life on the margins of American society. A basic premise in much of his work is that, in overpopulated communities everywhere, disaster has already struck, and infrastructures are on the verge of collapse.
In line with his interests in the power of the state, De Keyzer has explored prison life in countries as various as Democratic Republic of Congo and Siberia. In 2017, he took a 60 day tour in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, resulting in the project DPR Korea Grand Tour (2017). Other significant projects include the epic Moments Before the Flood (2012), in which De Keyzer travelled more than 82,000 miles to more than 5,000 locations in Europe to “photograph this beautiful and very unique coastline, riddled with history, before it’s too late”. The sequel, Higher Ground (2017), is a disturbing imagining of the consequences of climate change, showing a fictional world of tomorrow.
Born in Belgium, De Keyzer’s career as a freelance photographer began in 1982 while he was supporting himself as a photography instructor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. At the same time, his interest in the work of other photographers led him to co-found and co-direct the XYZ-Photography Gallery.
De Keyzer has worked on assignments for publications including The New York Times, TIME Asia, Rolling Stone, LA Times and The Guardian.
De Keyzer, who has exhibited his work regularly in European and US galleries, is the recipient of a large number of awards including the Book Award from the Arles Festival, the W. Eugene Smith Award (1990) and the Kodak Award (1992).
A Magnum nominee in 1990, he became a full member in 1994.

• The workshop fee does not include international transport, accommodation in Jakarta or ground expenses.
• For International applicants, Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case the workshop is cancelled. We highly recommend that you buy refundable tickets and/or travel insurance
• Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse the totality of the ticket price if cancellation is made at least 21 days before the start of the workshop, minus a £50 administrative fee. We will charge 50% of the ticket price if cancellation is made between 15 and 21 days before the workshop and 100% of the ticket price if cancellation is made less than 15 days before the start of the workshop.
