August 28 marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, when more than 250,000 civil rights demonstrators descended on Washington, D.C. to demand racial equality and an end to legalized segregation in the United States. The march was the largest demonstration of its kind to date as 2000 "freedom buses" and 30 "freedom trains" brought protestors - including 60,000 whites - from all over the country.<p>

Peacefully converging on the National Mall, the crowd held banners, sang hymns and listened to civil rights speakers. The massive demonstration brought together labor, religious and civil rights groups in urging Congress to pass a proposed Civil Rights Bill. Culminating with Martin Luther King Jr. delivering his famous "I have a dream" speech, the event defined an era and has become one of the most remarkable days in U.S. history.
