On April 8th, 2013 former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke.

A polarizing figure during her time in office, the conservative and uncompromising Thatcher was both vilified and praised by her constituency. During the economic downturn of the 1970s, she privatized state owned companies and weakened the influence of labor unions. In 1982 she mobilized the military to confront Argentina during the Falklands War, which increased her popularity at home.

For her long political service, Thatcher was granted a life long peerage by Queen Elizabeth II.
