Magnum City to Sea Workshop
11th – 15th March 2013

Magnum Photos are delighted to announce a 2013 partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London, starting in the spring with a truly distinctive photography workshop hosted by icons of the British holiday industry, Butlins.

The partnership is inspired by Goldsmiths’ 2011 international symposium ‘City to Sea’, which brought together artists, photographers and social scientists to develop visual projects and sociological research exploring culture, tourism, coastal regeneration and the heritage of the British seaside.

Following on from the success of this symposium, Magnum photographer Peter Marlow will lead a four day workshop in the seaside resort of Bognor Regis in West Sussex, assisting participants with the production of new exploratory projects whilst developing photographic identity and visual narratives. During the workshop, participants will work alongside Marlow and the City to Sea curators, artists Rebecca Locke & David Kendall, in a daily program of shooting, reviewing, critiquing, mentoring and editing, hosted by Butlins.

The workshop program will be accompanied by contextual presentations and discussions with Goldsmiths, University of London researchers and artists, including Paul Halliday, Course Leader of the international MA in Photography and Urban Cultures and Bognor Regis historian Sylvia Endacott.

The workshop will culminate in a dual-site, public outdoor projection of images produced over the four days, to be held at the historic Bognor Regis Pier, and at Butlins’ Shoreline Hotel.

City to Sea will also be presenting the ‘William Blake Imagination Photo Booth’, a unique interactive seaside photo booth inspired by Blake’s poetry, at Bognor Regis Bandstand from 8th – 9th March 2013.

Magnum photographer Peter Marlow will deliver a presentation of his photographic career to members of the public on Monday 11th March at 19:00. VENUE TBC

This event is made possible through the generous support of Butlins.

Butlins
Billy Butlin opened his first resort in 1936. Right from the start, his aim was to bring a little colour and happiness into the lives of hardworking families. Billy’s principles for the perfect holiday were as straightforward and down-to-earth as the man himself. And to this day, while a lot has changed, we still believe in his mission to delight.
