Magnum photographer Olivia Arthur will guide a group of participants through a four-day masterclass focused on developing your photographic projects with a personal narrative and refining your practical knowledge.

Through an intensive schedule involving shooting, group critiques, editing sessions and lectures, participants will have a unique experience photographing in Goa, India, during the GoaPhoto Festival.

Each participant will work on a story during the workshop that they will be able to continually revisit and refine. Projects may be ongoing or started fresh, with the overall goal for the week to challenge participants in order to reach new levels and create innovative and engaging work.

The masterclass will end with a public screening organised on the last day of the workshop to showcase each project.

“For me, part of the power of still photography is the ambiguousness of pictures, the ability to give a hint about a scene or event without being too absolute.” - Olivia Arthur

Biography
Olivia Arthur
Olivia Arthur is known for her in-depth photography examining people and their personal and cultural identities. Much of her work has illuminated the daily lives of women living in countries as varied as Saudi Arabia, India and across Europe. A more recent focus on large-format portraiture has brought her work back to the UK.

In her first book, Jeddah Diary (2012), she explored her journey photographing women in Saudi Arabia and the complexity of representation in a largely closed society. The project weaved photographs with her diary - a collection of anecdotes of “moments that got away”. Her second book, Stranger (2015), is a journey into Dubai seen through the eyes of the survivor of a shipwreck. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has been included in institutional collections in the UK, USA, Germany and Switzerland.
