Between 1972 and 1975, Susan Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing strippers that worked for carnivals in small cities in New England, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Portrayed on stage and in the dressing rooms, their public performances and private life are captured in the author’s lenses. Made up by a group of pictures, an audio-visual piece and a photobook, this series addresses the feminine body from masculine desire and testimonies of women devoting their days to a show in which joy, awe and risk are included in voyeurism.

Both aspirations and ambitions regarding eroticism and sexuality are represented in the testimonies of these strippers, as well as their couples, show managers and customers. Both free and oppressive decisions are made by dancers provoking others in the search of social autonomy using their bodies. Seductively conspicuous appearances and fugues for former conservationists are displayed as scenes where what is unpredictable of eroticism entangles vulnerability and control. Those observing and those being observed chase each other and swing places from an infinite look.

Susan will discuss Carnival Strippers in conversation with Pablo Ortiz Monasterio from 18:00 – 18:45.
