Romania

How should Romania be represented today, 30 years after the Revolution? What realities, but also what perspectives can this region have? The EIDOS Foundation in Bucharest has given carte blanche to photographers to deliver their portrait of the country today.

Despite the difference in methods and styles, in subjects and interests, the authors share a vision of Romania that is summarized in the plural title: “Romanias”. For it is difficult today to speak of a single Romania. Several countries, several realities seem to exist or to coexist simultaneously. What the photographers also share is this journey through Romania: the mission of crossing this country transversally, representing its landscapes, its society, its history, its present, its imagination.

Perhaps this project and its reportages all retain a certain latent value, in addition to the title “Romanias” which is already a response that the photographers give to the current state of the country. What will we discover in 30 years in these six photographic essays that each in their own way cover the Romania of today? These pieces of cutting and crossing through society not only do they offer a transversal image of Romania, they are also strewn with latent signs that only the future will reveal.

This project is a collaboration between the EIDOS Foundation, a non-profit organization, and Magnum Photos. The book “Romanias” featuring these photographic essays will be released for the first time during the exhibition. The latest has been curated by Florian Ebner, chief curator of photography at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
