Aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, each Magnum photographer will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst peers. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer that they would like to work and all efforts will be made to accommodate each choice. Students will spend the five days alongside their selected photographer developing visual language, photographic identity, practical, technical and conceptual skills and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace. Participants will be asked to approach a photographic story in Austin or the surrounding area. Upon acceptance, students will be emailed a welcome package with directives from their instructor as well as pertinent details about the workshop and information on traveling to and working in Austin.

This workshop takes place as complementary programming to the historical accessioning of the Magnum Press Archive by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and the exhibition of this work, entitled Radical Transformation: Magnum Photos into the Digital Age.

The Ransom Center curators will grant workshop students exclusive access to this exhibition as well as a private, hands on, tour of the exhibition and the archival holdings.

On Thursday, December 12th, the Magnum photographers will participate in a panel discussion hosted by the Austin Center for Photography. This panel discussion is open to the public, however workshop students will be granted free admission as well as priority seating. A reception and book signing will follow the discussion.

The workshop will culminate in a screening of each student’s work at the prestigious Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin on Friday, December 13th. A reception will follow.

Tuition for the Magnum workshop is $1350 USD and does not include flights, accommodations, or meals. All on the ground expenses are the responsibility of the student. Students will be emailed a full welcome package with suggestions for lodgings as well as a guide to Austin, Texas. Magnum Photos will also supply each student with a letter of credentials for the workshop in the event that access to subjects is required.

Registration and acceptances are open until December 5th, 2013.

Once you submit your application, you will be notified within 7 business days of your status. Full payment of the tuition is required within 7 business days. Refund policies will be emailed with acceptances.

A non-refundable $100 application fee is required for each application. If accepted, this balance will be applied to the final tuition. If the student is not accepted, a refund of the application fee, minus a $5 processing charge, will be granted.
