“The City Stripped Bare” looks at five bodies of work by the photographers Burt Glinn, Leonard Freed, Jim Goldberg, Patrick Zachmann and Antoine D’Agata, that take as their subject the city’s underbelly. The main arteries of the city, its streets, are the frontline in the battle between order and chaos, providing an alternative marketplace and home for those that fall through, or drop out of societies net. Two years before Magnum was founded, Weegee’s “Naked City” (1945) encapsulated his voyeuristic vision of New York City’s streets. Magnum originates...
