In May of 2015 Moises Saman traveled to Rojava, the Kurdish region of north-east Syria, to photograph foreign volunteers in the YPG (Kurdish abbreviation for People’s Protection Units). He found a number of them who’d arrived from all over the world; Dutch, Spanish, Irish, New Zealander, British, Iranian, Estonian, Canadian and American. They were motivated to travel great distances at their own expense for numerous reasons: to escape their daily working lives, follow a sense of adventure, and for many of the Americans, to seek out the action they never experienced during their time in the US military....
