Feature - Affordable Housing Crisis in California
California’s real estate and rental markets have long been expensive and even unaffordable for many Californians. But the problem has spiraled out of control in recent years, and by 2019 rents have risen faster than incomes, forcing a huge part of the active population to find different solutions for housing. Despite massive infusions of public funding to try to solve the problem, counties across the state have reported double-digit increases in homelessness.
On assignment for National Geographic, Magnum photographer Carolyn Drake documented the growing housing crisis in California.
