In the spring of 2026, assigned by The New York Times, Alec Soth documented how the increase in the number of executions in Florida has affected the social actors involved in this process, from priests accompanying death row inmates to activists opposed to the death penalty.

While most U.S. states have retreated from death penalty, Florida remains one of the last states to still use it and has recently been carrying out executions at a record pace. Since January 2025, the governor of Florida has been expediting the execution of death warrants without a clear protocol, making the situation difficult for those advocating on behalf of death row inmates: lawyers, members of the clergy, inmates’ families, and activists opposed to the death penalty.

This race against death is reigniting tensions surrounding the moral and ethical issues related to justice, in a country where justice itself is the subject of ideological battles.

Iranians during a massive funeral procession in Tehran pay their respects to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during American and Israeli bombardments on February 28th.

Authorities waited for 4 months to organize funeral ceremonies.

France experienced its most catastrophic heatwave in the second half of June 2026, with initial estimates reporting 1,000 excess deaths. For around two weeks, temperatures reached extremely high levels, sometimes exceeding 40°C in the shade in several cities during the most intense periods. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre closed earlier than usual, and the Pride parade and the Solidays music festival, which was expected to draw 220,000 people from 26 to 28 June, were both cancelled. Meanwhile, Parisians and those in the surrounding suburbs tried to mitigate the heat by staying outside, seeking shade and swimming in available water. In the north of the French capital, many people went swimming in the Canal Saint-Martin, a tributary of the Seine. Using thermal imaging technology, Antoine d’Agata photographed people trying to escape the heat in the 10th arrondissement, as well as homeless individuals who were among those most affected and had the hardest time accessing water.

June 2026. Paris Heatwave

In this photo book, Salih Basheer documents the devastation of the war in Sudan, focusing on the humanitarian impact and experiences of loss and displacement. Born in Sudan, Salih is intimately connected to this story, and through it, he presents the challenges his people are facing — both inside Sudan and in neighboring countries where many have sought refuge.

"The Return." (Sudan)

On the afternoon of April 8, 2026, Israel launched Operation Eternal Darkness. In less than ten minutes, more than 50 airstrikes reached Lebanon, killing over 360 people and injuring more than a thousand. Assigned by The New Yorker, Myriam Boulos documented the aftermath of Israel’s deadliest attack, and the relentless search for loved lost ones amid the rubble of the destroyed buildings. Along with journalist Rania Abounez, Boulos followed a family’s desperate search for Zahra Abboud, a 27-year-old completing a master’s degree in biochemistry. She had left Sidon with her sister a month before, due to the increasing evacuation orders sent by Israel. Zara was missing after the bombing of the Hamad building, located a few meters away from the American University of Beirut. Eight days later, her father Qassem, who had stayed in Sidon but went to Beirut as soon as he heard the news, found her arm under the rubble and identified it as at the morgue. Zahra was one of the 24 people killed in the airstrike on the Hamad building.

Myriam Boulos went to the Hamad building to document the remaining rescue efforts and the remains of the building. She also followed the Abboud family at Zahra’s grave, which they visit daily.

We knowledge that we are on the land of the Anishnaabeg nation. The spot where we gather is the traditional land of the Three Fires Confederacy: the Ottawa, Potawatomi and Ojibwe. (We recognize that this is also home of the Delaware nation today.) This land was settled through the McKee Purchase Treaty in 1790 and we, as beneficiaries of the treaty, must recognize our responsibilities including our collective responsibilities to the land and water.

My overall project is based on the first people to become American refugees on their own land in today’s context. Over the course of the past 13 years I have documented more than a dozen Native American communities from James Bay in the extreme north of Ontario to Arizona and New Mexico at the most southern US border.

Historical colonial practice had, by 1890, reduced North American native populations from between 10 – 18 million to approximately 250,000 marking what was perceived by the general public as being the end of the Indian Wars. US policy, since the days of European settlement, had been to systematically reduce those numbers by the use of residential schools, reservations, and ratios of blood quantum. But the current “mixed” population, due to native to non-native marriage, stands at approximately 10 million today. Because of isolation and displacement from urban and media centers, the first Americans remain forgotten people. My project is to help shine light on a non-urban population in the most desolate regions of America.
(Note: if you combine racial mix, only 2.92% of the US population is Native American.)

On my recent March 2026 trip, I engaged with the Crow Indians of the Great Plains who in the mid-17th to early 18th centuries had abandoned agriculture to follow the bison to the Yellowstone River region relying on them for sustenance. With the displacement of other Native Americans from Missouri, Ohio and the eastern states by white settlers, the Crow were forced into conflict over land and its resources with the much larger and powerful Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Blackfeet Confederacy. To survive, they allied themselves with the U.S. Cavalry suffering massive defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876 (Custer’s Last Stand) situated on the current Crow reservation.

The buffalo were already in the process of being systematically decimated with the intention of starving out all the Plains Indians. The Crow, like other native tribes, were betrayed. Many prisoner-of-war camps became Indian reservations, most of which remain Federal Property today. In order to force Indians to assimilate or vanish, the reservation and residential school systems were set up by the US government with the sole purpose of failure. Native language, culture (the Potlatch), Sundance and even children’s ceremonies became illegal.

Resistance is the crux of my larger project.

I visited the Crow to document poverty as well as an independent and unique culture (including tribal dancing and a buffalo kill.) Slowly, the buffalo like native language, are coming back.

The U.S. Allotment Act of 1877 had significantly reduced tribal land holdings from 138 million acres to 48 million acres by 1934. White ranchers began to acquire native land on reservations and American Indians have very little means of gaining it back. Today, 40% of the Crow reservation is owned by non-whites, (see map).

I visited Brandon Simeon, a buffalo rancher and a tribal member. Because his mother was Crow, local ranchers in the 1960’s had attempted to prevent their resettlement by blocking access to electricity and social services. Against all odds, Brandon and his wife today maintain 800 acres of hills and pasture that is both leased and owned. But they cannot borrow money from a bank because banks cannot foreclose on native land, which is one reason for lack of development and current poverty levels. Still they persist.

This work is a part of a much larger project on American Indian displacement and the political and poverty struggles of “Indians”, pushed aside by urban- centric concerns and eastern-centric media, as well as past and current US administrations.

Footnote: On May 8, 2026, under pressure from Republican Governor Greg Gianforte, the cattle industry, and the Trump Administration, the Bureau of Land Management revoked bison grazing permits held by the non-profit American Prairie on 63,000 acres of federal public land in Montana. This further hurts the Coalition of Large Tribes which represents more than 50 Native nations and over half the population or Native Americans.

The Crow People

While the current Israeli attacks on Lebanon are among the most intensive in the country’s history, most Lebanese people have experienced conflict for several generations. On assignment for Le Nouvel Obs, Beirut-based photographer Myriam Boulos built a portrait of the country’s diverse population and analyzed the impact of consecutive wars on its people, whose beliefs and political ideas vary widely. She met with families of both residents and displaced people in Beirut, documenting how each generation copes with life in a city undergoing intense adaptation to the largest mass displacement in the country’s history.

She met three multigenerational families. Grandparents, parents, and children. One family had been displaced from Nabatieh, a town in the south of the country that has experienced heavy displacement due to the intensification of Israeli attacks. Another flew from the south and now rents an apartment in Beirut. She also photographed Lebanese writer Charif Najdami and his wife, and encountered families living in makeshift tents on Beirut's sea side.

New York is a gigantic stage on which photographer Harry Gruyaert has been wandering for more than fifty years. A master of color, he invites us, in a book designed as a large album, to immerse ourselves in a sensory experience: each image unfolds over a double page, in the style of a storyboard. To accompany this visual journey, Harry Gruyaert invited Cédric Klapisch to imagine short stories. Throughout the pages, the director unfolds a scenario punctuated by vignettes in which Gruyaert's subjects come to life like actors. The city resonates with voices, dreams, and the sounds of the street. New York oscillates between reality and fiction.

On January 29th of 2026, US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba, on top of the 64-year-long US embargo on Cuba, put in place after Castro took power in 1959 and instituted a single-party communist government. It has not taken long for Cuba to plunge into an energy crisis with severe consequences comparable to Cuba’s “special period” in the 90s after the fall of the Soviet Union and the subsequent suspension of aid in raw materials, notably petrol.

This comes after Trump’s takedown of Venezuela’s president on January 3rd 2026, Cuba’s primary petrol supplier. Cuba, which produces around 40 percent of its own fuel, is seeing recurring nationwide blackouts, or “apagones”, with its archaic petrol-reliant electrical grid, or provides electricity to cities only hours at a time. Repercussions are felt at every level as government-controlled industries falter, from garbage disposal, water supply, hospital care, and public transportation, to the distribution of goods and foreign aid in the country. Cubans resort to using bicycles, cooking with fire, burning garbage and boldly protesting in the streets–a rare occurrence and a crime punishable by imprisonment.

Magnum photographers have historically taken special interest in Cuba–over 50 Magnum photographers have covered Cuba throughout the years. Many of which, once drawn there, found themselves compelled to return, weaving a visual chronicle of a nation long seen as peripheral and frequently misunderstood. Images captured include portraits of political figures such as Che Guevara and Fidel Castro as well as historic political moments, snapshots of culture and everyday life, and the resilience of the Cuban people as they navigated shifting realities. By linking past to present, Magnum’s photos situates the current crisis not as a sudden rupture, but as the continuation of a long historical trajectory embedded in everyday life.

Cuba

Emin Özmen traveled to Lebanon in March 2026, documenting the consequences of the war spreading to the country's capital - meeting with people displaced by the latest airstrikes in Beirut, visiting them in shelters and public spaces. He also documented Rmeich, one of the Christian villages caught between Israel and Hizbollah at the southern border. Since 2023, internal displacement in search for safety has affected all classes of Lebanon's population, with refugees some Syria also returning to their country, lately recognized as a safer place for some.

He also photographed the actions of UNHCR and local NGO`s who support local population essential needs. Worries of a larger humanitarian and refugee crisis from the regional conflict is currently alerting the NGO's sector.

Israel Strikes Beirut. Displacements....

On February 28th, 2026 US and Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes on Iran. This military action follows months of anti-regime protests in cities and towns around Iran which the government reacted to with brutal crackdowns.
Magnum photographers documented the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which resulted in the founding of the current theocratic Islamic Republic, and have covered political and social stories during the following decades.

Iran, From the Archive

The military clashes between Israel and various Lebanon-based militant groups trace back to Israel's founding in 1948, after which Lebanon and its neighbors declared war. Following the PLO's establishment in Lebanon in 1968, Israel invaded twice—in 1978 (Operation Litani) and in 1982—occupying southern Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah was formed to resist the occupation.

Israel withdrew in 2000, but conflict reignited in a month-long war with Hezbollah in 2006, which left significant damage in Lebanon but strengthened Hezbollah's political position. Since then, border skirmishes have continued, escalating further since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian war in October 2023.

As of March 2026, following the U.S.- and Israel-backed assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, 700,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon following intense Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders.

Magnum photographers have documented this enduring conflict for decades.

Israel & Lebanon from the Archives...

More than a year has passed since the Syrian rebel forces ousted Bashar al-Assad from power, ending the dictator’s 24-year reign. While the country is recovering and slowly transitioning to a new reality under President Ahmed al-Sharah, sectarian violence continues to plague some parts of the country. In January 2026, clashes erupted between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and government forces in northern Syria, amid negotiations over integrating the SDF into the official army. Intense fighting occurred in the Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Ashraffiye and Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo, forcing thousands to flee their homes. A deal was eventually reached between the two parties.

Emin Özmen traveled to the Aleppo Governorate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to document the current situation in the city and its surroundings. Once an economic hub for the country, thirteen years of internal conflict destroyed Aleppo, and its civilians are still suffering from the remains of violence. Özmen visited a camp in Afrin and met with people who fled Aleppo in 2017 during intense battles, as well as with those who had arrived more recently. The photographer also documented the ICRC clearing weapons in mining areas where landmining still pose a threat to the local population; Talal Jomaa Alfraij, 50, lost his leg after a landmine explosion while walking to work in an olive field near his village, Al Hajalie. Özmen also photographed the Khafsa water plant unit, where the ICRC operates to ensure the quality of clean water. The plant provides clean water to 3,2 million people, according to the Ministry of water.

The Scars of Aleppo

Late 2025, Sabiha Çimen has been documenting a largely invisible crisis unfolding in Gloster, Louisiana, a town of fewer than 900 residents, predominantly Black, living in the shadow of a UK-owned biomass plant, Drax Biomass Inc. Amite Bioenergy.

Marketed in Europe as “green energy,” the wood pellets produced here tell a radically different story on the ground:

Residents of Gloster wake up daily to a film of ash coating their porches, furniture, and lungs. Dust clings to curtains, fills air vents, and floats unseen while asthma, respiratory illness, and unexplained deaths rise without investigation. There are no health warnings, no regulators, and no accountability. Many elders now rely on oxygen or multiple inhalers to breathe. The Drax facility operates 24/7, but many locals don’t even know it’s the source of their suffering. They’ve simply been left to endure.

This story is about more than pollution. It’s about energy colonialism. It’s about how “clean” fuel for the Global North is produced in sacrifice zones of the American South, where poverty, race, and geography silence resistance. It’s about the cost of so-called climate solutions when industry targets the most politically disposable communities which seems that In the Deep South, toxic industries trace the fault lines of slavery. It is the enduring architecture of historical injustice. Project held deliberately with our photographer Sabiha Cimen, who is a Guggheneim fellow and got the New York Times prestigious ASME award for publication with her very intimate and personal Earthquake story in Turkey. This project portrays dead animals, children with cancer, goes deeper in people's lives and spaces, still lives and metaphors, reflecting deeper issues such as black history, racism, environmental injustice, uncanny situations, and eerie feelings yet all intertwined with the theme of resilience.

This deep photo series weaves powerful and intimate portraits of residents impacted by health complications, dust-laced homes, vents, and interior spaces, the facility looming near homes, churches, and community centers, scenes of resistance, resilience, and survival.

Gloster

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages to Gaza, 48 of whom have not returned, according to the BBC.

By September 2025, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s ongoing war, which escalated after the attack. In August of this year, Israel announced an expanded offensive in Gaza City, home to 2 million people, where displaced residents now face famine amid continued strikes.

As the humanitarian crisis continues in Gaza and violence escalates in the West Bank, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice, while 157 UN member states—81% of the UN—recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

Oct. 7 & the War on Gaza

The Russo-Ukrainian War began in February 2014, triggered by Ukraine's Maidan Revolution. Over the following eight years, the conflict escalated with naval skirmishes, cyberattacks, Russia's annexation of Crimea and support to pro-Russian separatists fighting against Ukraine’s military in the ongoing Donbas War. In February 2022, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine, deepening its occupation and igniting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II. The war has caused a massive refugee crisis and led to the loss of tens of thousands of lives.

Magnum Photographers have been documenting the Russo-Ukrainian War since 2014, capturing scenes from the front lines and inside both countries, illustrating the impact of the war on people's daily lives. The selection below showcases our ongoing coverage in the region, which has spanned over a decade.
