BRAZIL. Bahia. Itacaré. 02 August 2020. Caio looks at the window from his grandmother´s kitchen. The view is the favela Bairro Novo, one of the 2 favelas there is in Itacaré and the main purveyor of drugs in this little touristic town controlled by the Comando Vermelho. Maria, his grandmother, moved to the favela when the Mayor gave away the area to new settlers to make the city grow and consolidate his political advantage with new grateful voters. The sudden growth of the population was not followed by an expansion of the facilities in town and with only a small and unprepared hospital, all the serious COVID cases in Itacaré had to be relocated to the nearest hospital in Itabuna, 100km away.
