TURKEY, Mardin, 28 September 2020. Souda, 55, stands on the street in the Istasyon neighbourhood of Mardin. She and her family fled to Turkey from Til Temir in northern Syrian Arab Republic in 2013. Souda says, "One night, we were under heavy bombardment. When I woke up for morning prayer, everything was destroyed, up in smoke." So they took a few bags and left everything behind. Last July, Souda fell very ill. She went to the emergency clinic of the Mardin hospital, where she was diagnosed as being positive for COVID-19. She received free treatment, as promised by the Turkish government. She says, "They wanted to keep me in the hospital but who would take care of my children? So I refused and went home. The police told me not to leave the house for 15 days,” and came to check on her several times to make sure that she was respecting her quarantine. She continues, “I put myself in a separate room, started wearing mask at home to not spread the virus into my family.” Souda suffered a lot, and tells us," The pain took a month and a half to completely disappear."
