Caio does not remember going to the doctor and never really had to use the scarce facilities that Itacaré has in the local hospital to attend its growing population. Bahía is not one the most affected states by COVID in Brazil, but the pandemic has brought to the surface the dysfunctional and clearly insufficient medical care available for citizens. Itacaré had, until mid-August, 338 positive cases of COVID and with only primary attention available, the most serious cases had to be taken to the nearest hospital in Itabuna.
