MEXICO. Guerrero. 2021. A man prays at an altar to the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Holy Cross in El Tepeyac hill.
The presence of the poppy for nearly five decades is gradually changing local culture. Indigenous communities call the poppy "corn-ball," giving great significance to its seed, almost on par with corn.
It is now common to see the poppy seed or paste included in religious altars next to corn and pumpkin seeds.
