RUSSIA. Yakutia. Magaras. July 08, 2021.
Local volunteers from Magaras stop while fighting the fire, watching a destructive crown fire. Crown fires burn through the top layer of foliage on a tree, known as the canopy. Crown fires, the most intense type of fire and often the most difficult to contain, need strong winds, steep slopes, and a heavy fuel load to continue burning. Crown fires are a new phenomenon in Yakutia. Before only the ground used to burn, which made it possible for trees to recover. With a crown fire, a whole tree burns within seconds and the crown fire can jump over rivers and streets.
